DAY 61

Yesterday went just about how I thought it would. I was exhausted by lunch. Despite having slept well, I still struggled to keep my energy up throughout the day. But what the hey. There were many activities and things to keep me busy, so I only really noticed being tired when I had a moments break.

My Morning View

I was in the music room for the majority of the day. It was peaceful. The music and computer room are housed in a separate building called the “innovation house”. It’s near the front gate, but away from the main areas of activity, so it stays quiet. It rained for most of the morning; the patter-patter on the roof was a nice white noise.

Music Class

I had three streams of classes—each one lasting 80 minutes. The first half we did some notes and music theory stuff, the second half we practiced some songs. Two classes were really good about practicing and playing well, the last class of the day was a mess (right as kids were getting antsy to go home). Luckily I had an excuse to send them away early—riveting results needed my attention.

Makeshift Ferry

While sending my final class back to the main building, we found a nice lake had formed in front of our entrance/exit. Luckily one girl came prepared for the weather with rain boots; she served as a ferry for the kids through the deep water.

Riveting Results
English Club

These two photos may look identical, but they were two different classes. Riveting results had only 30 minutes left when I showed up, so it went pretty quick. The kids were doing some vocabulary and typing exercises. Nothing too complicated or teacher intensive, thankfully. Next came English club in the same room—out with the old, in with the new. And the new brought with them a lot of energy. Two teachers and I worked on figuring out some class leaders for the term who would help direct class. I don’t know why this is just now happening in the 9th week, but I’ve stopped being surprised by confusing schedules.

Very Stuck
Less Stuck

The route home was eventful. We managed to get stuck twice. (Don’t ask how, I’m still a little confused myself). Our regular driver quit two days and our new driver struggled with the route a bit. The first time we got stuck we needed a safari jeep to come pull us out (it took about 45 minutes of pushing it nowhere to land on this decision). The second time we got stuck took only 5 minutes of jimmying the bus back and forth to get lucky. We got home around 7:00ish. The route took over an hour longer than normal, getting us back to school at 6:00—and then we sat at school waiting for people to close out their day.

I’ve been doing my laundry frequently now—every other day or so. Normally I like taking risks, but one that results in me wearing day old underwear has me beat. By my math, if I do my laundry every 3ish days I should be safe. With the spontaneous nature of the rain I assume that one of every 6ish days will have enough of a break in the rain to dry out clothes, so I make sure that I am ready! But the pattern seems to be a few days of real good sun and then a week or so of intermittent rain (not allowing enough dry time) so if I’m not careful I’ll find myself in a pickle. Anyways, last night I put away some laundry that had dried out the previous day and hung up a new batch. After that I ate some dinner and then went to bed. Dinner was fish, Ugali, and greens. I enjoyed it more than usual; I was really hungry last night. Before bed I read a little, but I crashed quickly last night—about an hour earlier than usual. This morning it’s sprinkling so I’m worried we might struggle again with the route.
