DAY 60

Yesterday marks two months of being away from home. Don’t get that confused with two months of being in Africa; remember I had 48 hours of travel time to start my adventure!

Soggy Walk

In the morning I was supposed to go on a walk with Lucas provided that it wasn’t raining. Unfortunately, it had rained all night and only just decided to stop as I woke up. The sopping wet ground meant no stroll. I still had to walk to school, though, so I was going through the mud one way or the other.

Bus Troubles pt. ?

On the route the mud didn’t help our situation. We were relegated back down to small bus because regular bus has something going on. I’m not quite sure what, but it’s a hot mess and I have no faith it will ever be operational for a period of more than a week. We ended up getting stuck right near the end of the route. Luckily we had dropped a load of kids at school right before we got stuck so there were only 3 kids having to wait on us. A lot of pushing around got us out, but not before I got nice and dirty.

At school I had English lessons. Looking back I felt much busier than I actually was. It might have been my lack of sleep showing a bit. Yesterday’s lesson consisted of reviewing their English exam from last week, a bit of lecture on past perfect continuous tense, and then some exercises. I spent some time marking books in between lessons and preparing for today—I have to teach music by myself. I’m a bit nervous having to make something productive of a room full of noisy kids and instruments, but it will be great practice for me.

Riveting Results

In the afternoon we had riveting results. Pamela and I were in one room and some other teachers were in the next room. Samwel, the head of the whole program, hasn’t been present for the last few classes and I’m nervous that if it stays this way the program might fall apart. Organization has been lacking recently—teachers are coming in and out of the school, drivers are quitting and being hired. I really hope it’s not like this the whole year through; poor Pius has a tough job (and I understand why he wants to offload work to me) if this is a constant way of life.

Evening route went well. Nothing special to report on past 5:30pm. I got home and relaxed a little. Helped Jovin with some homework. My clothes dried out during the day so I’m back to a comfortable level of clean clothes—nail bitting situation there for a bit. Dinner was delicious and large. I’m starting to eat more food than I probably need; good thing I haven’t seen a scale since coming here. I started my new book which was a difficult choice; but The Iliad it is. Only about half of the pages seem to be the actual text; the other half being analysis, introduction and all that fluff. I’m hoping I get bored and it takes me a while to get through so I can make it last a while longer. Today will be long and tiring I’m sure—good thing I slept well last night!
