DAY 78

Yesterday was boring but calming. Some of the family left in the morning to go to Nairobi to pick John up from school and bring him home for Easter break. So, there aren’t many people left in the house. Yesterday there was no school for the kids, but for some reason Pius wanted the teachers to go to school. I would say it was a waste of a day, but I found things to do to keep busy. For some other teachers I felt bad, however, seeing as they had nothing to do.

So, the day before yesterday Pius had called all the teachers together to say that school would be canceled for the students on Friday, but the teachers needed to come. He said there would be a meeting at 10:00 a.m. yesterday where we would discuss the upcoming parent conferences (happening today) and make sure everyone was on the same page, prepared, and organized. So, teachers showed up to school at 10. Pius didn’t get there until 11. Fine by me, I played some guitar with Ezekia and we found things to keep us busy. When he arrived he said the meeting would then take place at 12. Long story short, this pattern continued and it wasn’t until 3:00 p.m. that we finally had the meeting. At that point some teachers had simply left, and despite having no right to be, Pius seemed pretty livid that they disappeared.

Long Day

I was happy to have all the free time; I got a lot of stuff done and like being at school—there’s not much for me to do at home with near everybody gone. However, I feel bad for a lot of the teachers.

After the meeting, Abby and I stayed until 7:00 setting up her classroom for conferences. Throughout the day she had been helping other teachers with their classroom set up and left hers till the end. When we got home, it was only Abby, Grace and myself which was nice—the house is rarely this quiet, there’s always some type of fighting or bickering or activity going on.
