DAY 166

Waiting for Work

At work, the Tanzania big boss has left for a week of leave, so everything is moving super slow. Yesterday morning, after having prepared for the day and breakfast, I found myself showing up to work right at 8:00am. Normally I’m the second or third person into the office, and have no problem getting inside. I ran into a problem however, as everyone seemed to take the country directors absence as cause for their own. I waited until after 8:30am for the first person to arrive with a key to the office.

Throughout the whole day, the pace of work was remarkably slow. People passed around the office talking about anything but work. At any given time I could hear the mindless scroll of coworkers on TikTok characterized by the monotonous, AI-generated voice overs. One office room was so blatant as to project a movie on the wall. It felt kind of fun and relaxing for the first hour or so—like everyone was in on some sort of secret. But after a time I realized it to be very shameful on their part for acting like young students when a teacher leaves the classroom, and on my behalf for naturally joining in.

I finally got to work around 10am and had a pretty productive day other than the hour long lunch break. Towards the end of my day I was overcome with a great fatigue and found myself wanting to just rest my head on the desk and relax. Thankfully though I had a meeting, so I was forced to power on.

When I got back to the hotel I laid in bed and did about an hour of duolingo. I was a bit upset with myself though because I have been trying to muster to energy and motivation to do my laundry before it builds up to an overwhelming amount, but just forgot entirely about it. I guess that leaves me with a task for today!

I decided that I’m going to take a break from running for this week to let my heel and blister get a bit better. I’ve supplemented the exercise with a short stretching and body weight routine, but still I’m beginning to miss the running.

Today should be good. I’ve got a bunch to get done at work and outside of work I need to prepare for my upcoming travel to Arusha this weekend (in the form of buying a bus ticket) and also do my laundry it seems.
