DAY 157

Yesterday morning was pretty uneventful. I had my spaghetti for breakfast (along with other things) and then did some lounging around the hotel. I decided to change up my audiobook because I really could not engage with the last one and I’m very happy I did so. Now I’m enjoying The Great Gatsby in my free time.

Pilau Cooking

At noon I went over to my friend’s house to take a little cooking class. We spent 4 hours preparing this pilau dish and some other things. I didn’t do much other than add ingredients to a pot and stir, but I took a recipe down and hopefully I’ll be able to make this dish when I’m back home—it being one of my favorites.

Pilau Eating

We had our late late lunch close to 5pm and at that point I was starving. It probably made the food taste better than it actually was, but I was proud of what we had cooked up. I stuck around the house for a while after dinner and was amazed by a conversation we had. My friend is a believer (like a true whole hearted believer) in witches. I have a vague idea where this may come from and am a bit put off by it, but I was having a very fun time learning about how witches can curse lineages and the only way to rid yourself of the spells is to go to church and to pray.

The whole thing was in good spirits—I couldn’t help but laugh and my friend is very wise as to the customs and beliefs of Americans, so she wasn’t offended by my incredulity. Some of the things she talked about were so outlandish (like a witch cursing the dirt a car has passed over and causing it to crash later that day), but the things like blood sacrifices of children toed the line between reality and superstition, admittedly spooking me a bit.

I got home after the sun had set and was more than ready for a long night of rest. Unfortunately I had a tough time falling asleep and feel groggier than normal today. Good thing I’ll just be in the office, and good thing I have some enjoyable tasks that will keep me focused and alert.
