DAY 91

Time is starting to fly. Just yesterday I was thinking I’ll be gone in a week, but that yesterday was 5 days ago and the week is now only 2 days. I don’t know what happened.

Karma

Yesterday I think I was hit with a bit of karma. The previous day I had been giggling at the two busses that had gotten stuck—I guess that made it our turn next.

The morning started out real crappy; the sky was grey, the clouds were threatening rain, and I was just in a bad mood after waking up yesterday. I think I’m starting to get sad about leaving. Which is funny, because everything in me is very excited to be moving on to something new—I guess it’s just weird to have both emotions battling it out. Anyways, the bus event brought me back to a good sense of mind. It helped me to get back in the moment and appreciate everything here while I’m still able to.

At school things moved slow but it was very productive for me. I taught what might be my last English classes (we’ll see what today holds) and then spent the rest of my day preparing some things for my time in Ethiopia. A 6 hour day can feel like two completely different time spans, luckily yesterday was the generous one.

Growth

It’s been about a month since my last crop update (DAY 55 if you want reference). They are now taller than me and a few weeks away from harvest. It’s been fun to keep track of my dwindling days with the growth of something so living. One other thing that’s serving as my hourglass is my malaria pill bottle. So far I can’t notice a difference and I’m glad to have a lot more time on my hands. But I know the day will come when I’m counting them down and it’ll be interesting to see where I’m at then.

After school ended I decided to go on the remedial bus route. Abby and I haven’t been going to the past month or so because one of the new teachers lives on the route and was able to take our spot. It was nice not getting home after 7:30 everyday, but I think I was getting a little reminiscent and wanted to take everything in before I leave.

The Route

The route was fun, the kids were very excited to have me back; the teacher that goes with them is pretty strict and gives them the all mighty stick if they make too much noise on the way home, but the driver and I enjoy the kids and don’t mind if they’re creating a ruckus, as long as they aren’t hurting each other, so the kids were excited to have a change of pace. The driver—who speaks very little English—was teaching me a lot of Swahili. I feel like I would’ve enhanced my Swahili learning a lot if I had been going on the remedial route with this driver every day.

We got home later than I expected—around 8:00. I hurried to take a shower and eat dinner and then went right to bed. My sickness has been holding steady, so I’m trying to take it easy, drink a lot of water and get lots of sleep. I’d rather that, though, than if it were to have gotten worse. I don’t want to be ill going into my first tiring days of work at Water For Good next week.

Today might be my last day at school, depending on if they have and I go to remedial on Saturday. We will see.
