DAY 89

Yesterday was great and then bad. Although school was still on holiday (which ends today), teachers got to go enjoy a nice day at campus. Due to staying up late the previous night, my sleep was poor and I woke up feeling pretty crappy. Thankfully I didn’t have much to attend to and was able to steady myself with a slow morning.

Guilty Motorcycle Ride

Abby and I were running pretty late for school in the morning. I’m going to say it wasn’t my fault because I wasn’t aware what time we were supposed to get there for the teacher meeting, but I might have chosen to be a little ignorant. I was happy taking a lazy morning. We left for school about 45 minutes after we were supposed to have shown up. Luckily a motorcycle was driving past and gave us a lift and now looking back it didn’t really make a difference, but it was fun in the moment.

Transformed Cafeteria

Parents arrived at around 10:30 for a whole school meeting. I wasn’t quite sure what it was about or how long it would last. So, I was grateful when Lucas said his three minute Swahili speech, asked if anyone had questions, no one did, and it ended. I found out after the fact that Lucas was asking parents if they would be willing to pay $2 more a month for the spike in gasoline prices. I’m not quite sure how much of a choice they have in the matter, I was told that it was framed as a discussion, but no one seemed to have a problem.

After that meeting there was a long and tedious teacher meeting. The whole thing was in Swahili and I didn’t understand much of what was going on. I’m very happy with my Swahili progress—I was actually able to piece together a coherent narrative for some of the topics through the mix of English and my basic Swahili vocabulary. The meeting ended around 12:30 and by that time in the day I was very tired.

Music Teachers

Ezekia and I spent a little time practicing/performing before I decided I to call it and head home for the day. I don’t know what hit me on the way home, but I began to feel a bit sick.

The rest of my day was spent battling a runny nose, sore throat, and irritable bowels. I think the IBS was just a coincidence though, because right now John is suffering from a cold with very similar symptoms and I’m guessing I got it from him. I was very happy that dinner was early in the evening (around 7:30 as opposed to 8:30 or even later some nights) so I could get to bed and really rest. In the middle of the night I woke up to a massive storm. It lasted until morning, and now I’m excited to see how the bus route is going to go. I’m very happy to be going back to school for a few days before I leave—I’ve missed my friends and students!
